NEWS & EVENTS

Third Story Writers Guild strives to bring a bit of the arts to our Wisconsin Northwoods and provide a forum for those who love reading and writing. Writer's Digest, a wonderful magazine chock-full of tools and advice for aspiring writers, is now available in the Park Falls Public Library's collection, courtesy of financial contributions from our members. With financial help from the Park Falls Friends of the Library Group, we have had visits from regional author Victoria Houston and Wisconsin author/historian Jerry Apps. Local author Gary Edinger has also been our guest, as has Connecticut author Kourtney Heintz, author/musician/radio personality Michael Perry, author/naturalist John Bates and author Calli Bates. Here's what's coming up next.

Saturday, May 7

TSWG members will take a road trip to L.E. Phillips Library in Eau  Claire to commune with other writers and to attend a workshop lead by author Michael Perry. It promises to be a good time for all those traveling south. Even short road trips make us happy.

TBD

Last year our "Babes in the Woods" campout at Madeline Island never materialized. This summer we will go, even if its a day trip to spend time communing with nature and our fellow TSWG members. We hope the Muse will travel with us.

(left) Third Story Writer's Guild was proud to present the return of Michael Perry. He  will gave a presentation in the third floor auditorium of the Park Falls Public Library on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. Hope you were there!

(right) Calli Bates shared her story with Guild members on Aug. 24, 2015. Deciding to be a writer at age 10 was a dream that didn't end with the advent of adulthood. Bates' high fantasy novel The Waking Land will be published in 2016. She queried only a handful of agents before finding one who landed her a contract with Random House. A Cinderella story all author's wish for. Heartfelt thanks to Calli for sharing the insights she gained on her road to publication.

(left) Manitowish Waters native John Bates met with Third Story Writers Guild members Monday, Oct. 20, 2014 sharing his personal path to publication. He has authored seven books and collaborated on seven others. He then shared a fascinating power point presentation on the changing of the seasons, namely from autumn to winter, and how that change affects vegetation, birdlife and wildlife. He is presently working on his eighth book. Visit his website at www.manitowish.com for an interesting overview of his work.

(left) Author Kourtney Heintz visited with Third Story Writers Guild on July 25, 2013, giving a talk on her path to publication. She shared insights on getting an agent, book-cover design and different styles of writing. Her book, The Six Train to Wisconsin, was 2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Semifinalist and set in the local Northern Wisconsin town of Butternut. Heintz will return for events in July/August, 2014.

After meeting with Guild members he held a public presentation, mostly centered on one of his latest books Limping Through Life, which describes his experiences after being diagnosed with polio at age 12.

(left) Thursday, March 13, 2014 Third Story Writers Guild members did live readings of original works at local bistro Chequamegon Canoe Club. Poems, essays, rants on Wisconsin's tempermental winters, and the camraderie of writers and listeners highlighted the evening. The Guild thanks CCC owner Greg Broome for his hospitality.

(right) Third Story Writer's Guild's good friend, author Kourtney Heintz, visited on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014 giving an informal talk on her acquisition of a contract with Harlequin's YA imprint. She also shared insights stemming from her "hybrid" author status -- she has an independently published novel, the award-winning The Six Train to Wisconsin, on her resume' and now will take the traditional route for her latest book, The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts.
